Hurricanes take flight

After a slow start that saw the Guelph Hurricanes staring at an 0-3-0 record, the junior hockey team has won 4 of their last 5 games.

Guelph beat the Kitchener Dutchmen, LaSalle Vipers, Weatfield Blades and the Lambton Shores Preditors and how have they been doing it.

1. Hard Work: This team just doesn’t quit!!! Even in the games they have lost, they usually outplay thier opponants in the 3rd period. This characteristic will help them win more games as the season progresses.

2. Smothering Penalty Kill: Guelph is ranked in the top 3 of the 25 team league and recently allowed the #2 Powerplay unit from LaSalle to only one powerplay goal.

3. Improved offence: Led by speedy forward Dan Mohle who is 7th in the league scoring, Guelph’s offence has scored 15 goals in their first 2 games as opposed to 3 in their first 2 games of the season.

Overall this team is enjoyable to watch and in my opinion, the best kept secret in Guelph.

The Hurricanes play 2 home games this weekend:

Thursday night at 7:45pm they take on the Brantford Golden Eagles

and Saturday night they host the Listowel Cyclones. That game is at 7:30 pm. Both games are at the Sleeman Centre.

Thursday Sept. 24, Guelph Hurricanes take on the high flying LaSalle Vipers

Thursday Sept. 24th at 7:30 pm, the Guelph Hurricanes (2-4-0) will take on the LaSalle Vipers (3-1-0).

LaSalle is hosting Stratford on Wednesday, before travelling to Guelph.

Some key Vipers to watch include:

# 57 Forward -D.J. Turner 6 goals – 2 assists – 8 points in 4 games.
# 89 Forward -Drew Palmer 0 goals – 7 assists – 7 points in 4 games.
#72 Defenceman -David Sharpe 3 goals – 3 assists – 6 points in 4 games
# 7 Forward – Marco Maggio – 38 PIM in 4 games.
# 1 Goalie – Connor Lyons – 3 wins – 1 loss – 1 shutout – 2.75 GAA – .899 Sv%

Interesting game note:

LaSalle Vipers have the 2nd best PP in entire 25 team league 8/23 34.78%
Guelph Hurricanes have 2nd best PK in entire 25 team league 3/40 92.50%

Also,

LaSalle Vipers have 22nd best PK in entire league 8/30 73.33%
Guelph Hurricanes have 21st best PP in entire league 5/41 12.20%

So one of the keys to victory will be to stay out of the box, and to try to take advantage our PowerPlay opportunities.

Another couple interesting things about these two teams:

LaSalle’s scored 8-1st period goals, 2-2nd period goals & 13-3rd period goals over 4 games.
Guelph has allowed 5-1st period goals, 20-2nd period goals & 4-3rd period goals over 6 games.

Guelph’s scored 3-1st period goals, 5-2nd period goals & 8-3rd period goals.
LaSalle has allowed 1-1st period goal, 8-2nd period goals & 2-3rd period goals.

LaSalle has outshot their opponents 179(44.75 per game) to 119 (29.75 per game.

Guelph has been outshot by their opponents 209 (34.83 per game) to 179 (29.83 per game)

Also, LaSalle has scored first in all 4 games they played (3:58, 1:00, 5:05 & 6:10) so expect them to come flying out of the gate.

Based on these stats, another key to victory would be that Guelph needs to slow the game down and play tight defense. If they try to play run and gun with this team they may not fair too well.

Keys to Victory in tonights game between Guelph Hurricanes vs. Kitchener Dutchmen 7:30 pm at The Sleeman Centre

Tonight the 0-3-0 Kitchener Dutchmen roll into town to take on the 0-3-0 Guelph Hurricanes in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play.

Although the Hurricanes have lost 3 straight, they have improved their performance in every game.

Keys to victory for the Hurricanes:

  1. Get the lead early: In the first 2 games they found themselves behind by 5 and 4 goals before they got on the scoreboard.
  2. Win the 2nd period: In their first 3 games they allowed 5, 4 and 3 goals in the 2nd period. They have not allowed more than 1 goal against in either 1st or 3rd periods.
  3. Take the body: They were forcing Cambridge to cough up the puck by taking the body. This created scoring chances.
  4. Avoid the sin-bin: This was one of the main reasons why they almost beat Cambridge. More discipline = Less penalties
  5. Keep being aggressive on the P.K. : This was a definate bright spot against Cambridge.
  6. Take advantage of the PowerPlay: This is an area of opportunity.

Overall, If Guelph keeps playing the way they have been and keep improving, they will be able to make some noise, by the end of the season.

Cambridge came back with 3 goals one off he stick of  Brett Priesap and two from Mike Sones, and it looked like they would have take a 3-1 lead into the 2nd Intermission when Zach Dion would pull the Canes within one with his first of the year.
