Hurricanes drop a close one to Cyclones in OT

CANES LOSE IN OVERTIME

The atmosphere inside the Ice Palace was hot for a couple of hours as the Hurricanes and Cyclones put on one of the most entertaining, exciting games of the season. The Cyclones prevailed in overtime 4-3 but were pushed to the limit by the hard working Canes.

Listowel struck first with former Cane Dan Mohle chipping a loose puck into the net for a 1-0 first period lead. The Cyclones struck again before the Canes went to work. Tyson Theaker(17) scored from Mike McFarlane and Nic MacEachern making the score 2-1 entering the 3rd period.

The Canes came out flying in the 3rd and put pressure on Guelph native Jim Prigione. Prigone made a number of excellent saves before Luca Penzo(5) beat him with a power play goal to tie the game. Martin Kudla and Mike Iaccoca assisted on the goal. Canes kept up the pressure until McFarlane(10) with assists from Theaker and Wade Pfeffer put the Canes up 3-2.

Now it was McDougall’s turn to shine in the Canes net and he did. He made a number of excellent saves to keep the Canes in the lead. But with the Canes in control and less than 2 minutes left lighting struck. Former Hurricane Ken Rolph stole the puck in the offensive zone, walked in on McDougall and scored sending the game into overtime.

An ill-advised retailiation penalty with less than a minute left in regulation gave the Cyclones the man advantage heading into overtime. Fergus resident Eric Dekkers scored right off the face-off with a blast that caught McDougall off guard to send the Listowel fans home happy.

The one point puts the Canes in a dead heat with the Kitchener Dutchmen setting up their upcomng game on Tuesday in Kitchener.

The Canes have 4 games left in the regular season with the lone home game being next Thursday Feb 25th at the the Sleeman Centre vs. the Cambridge WinterHawks. Game time is 7:45 p.m.

Former Hurricanes Sink Guelph in 7-1 loss to Listowel

ROLPH, MOHLE SINK CANES

Former Canes (#7) Dan Mohle and (#25) Ken Rolph combine for 5 pts.

 Former Hurricanes Ken Rolph and Dan Mohle returned to the Sleeman Center with their new team the Listowel Cyclones Saturday night. Rolph had a goal and 2 assists and Mohle had a goal and an assist. They led the Cyclones to a convincing 7-1 win. The Canes were never in this game. This loss comes after beating the Cyclones at home 2-1 on Friday night.

It wasn’t pretty. The Canes couldn’t get anything going all night. They were outplayed and outhustled by the quicker Cyclones. Scoring for the Canes was Connor Ste Marie on helpers from Mike McFarland and Tyson Theaker.

The Canes next game is December 19 when the Welland Canadiens will be the visitors at he Sleeman Center. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Cyclonic Trade Rocks The Hockey World

It’s been a busy week for the Cyclone and Guelph Hurricane Management. These 2 teams pieced together a deal, the like that we haven’t seen in years. Probably the closest one to this was when the Edmonton Oilers dealt Wayne Gretzky to L.A. Several players involved and lots of great players and people involved.

For the Cyclones, we say goodbye to some very good young talent with Jake Weidner, Drew Pegrum, and Blair Goss all going to play in Guelph. These 3 players are not only talented but also have several more years of Junior eligibility. They are also great guys and their families are tremendous people and great supporters of hockey. We wish Jake, Drew, Blair, as well as their families all the best with their new team.

Now here’s the excitement for Cyclone fans. In return, we have acquired Guelph’s leading scorer, Dan Mohle, and their 3rd scorer, Ken Rolph. This is huge news for the Cyclone offence. Although they were kept off the score sheet last night, with their speed, skill, and determination, the points will come.

McDougall Steals Win as Hurricanes beat Listowel 2-1

MCDOUGALL STEALS WIN

McDougall stops 50 of 51 shots

Hurricanes goaltender, Chris McDougall has played well all season. Last night in Listowel was maybe his best game so far. Kicking out 50 of 51 shots and with the GM of the OHL Peterborough Petes in the crowd McDougall put on another goaltender clinic.

Jim Prigione the Cyclones goalie also played well only allowing goals by Jake Weidner(2) and Connor Ste Marie. Collecting assists were Daniel Cotroneo and Mike McFarland.

For the 3rd consecutive game the Canes were full measure for the win. They played hard for a full 60 minutes and carried the play at different times in the game.

This was the front end of a home and home series with the Cyclones and the 1st game between the 2 teams since the trade.

Tomorow night sees the return of Dan Mohle and Ken Rolph at the Sleeman Center. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Newly acquired Weidner impresses in 5-4 loss to Brantford

In his first game as a Hurricane, rookie Jake Weidner almost matched his point total that he accumulated in 24 games with the Listowel Cyclones.

Weidner scored 3 pts. vs. Brantford

Weidner who was acquired earlier this week along with fellow rookie, Blair Goss (for veterans Dan Mohle and Ken Rolph) was solid all night winning critical faceoffs and buzzing on a line with Martin Kudla and Mike Iacocca against the high flying Branford Golden Eagles.

Meanwhile Brantford through 46 shots at Hurricanes goaltender Chris McDougall and Josh McQuade added 4 points (3 goals and 1 assist) to his league leading point total in an exciting 5-4 win over Guelph.

This game featured powerplay goals, a short handed goal, a penalty shot, Guelph killing off a 5-3 and a fight.

Even though Guelph didn’t win the battle, they looked solid and may have picked up some information that can help them win the war, if these two team meet in the first round of the playoffs.

Tomorrow night the Hurricanes travel to Listowel to take on the Cyclones in a home-in-home series that concludes when these two teams play Saturday night (7:30 pm) at The Sleeman Centre.

Guelph Hurricanes announce Kids get in Free Night

Saturday is Kid's get in Free night

For all those Dad’s out there who need to keep the Kids occupied Saturday night so Mom can finish the Christmas Shopping, the Guelph Hurricanes have a solution to their problem.

This Saturday (Dec. 5th, 2009) night kids ages 0-13 get in Free as the Guelph Hurricanes take on Dan Mohle and the Listowel Cyclones in the back end of a home and home series.

For every adult ticket purchased up to 4 kids get in free.

This will be an opportunity for parents (the promotion works with Mom’s as well) to spend quality time (in a very economical way) with their kids during this hectic season.

Game time Saturday night is 7:30 pm at the Sleeman Centre.

3 game weekend only nets Hurricanes one point

Playing well for part of the game and coming up short in the end seems to be the trend following the Guelph Hurricanes these days.

Thursday night they faced a very good Waterloo Siskins ( 19-5-0 38 pts.) team at home and found themselves down 3-0 after the first period. Then they clawed their way back to outscore the Siskins 2-1 in the 2nd and 3rd period, eventually losing the game 4-2.

Saturday night they travelled to Cambridge (14-7-2 30 pts.) to take on the Winter Hawks in a game where they faced 52 shots, including 31 in the 2nd period. Cambridge scored 5 goals in that period and would go on to win the game 6-4.

Then the Canes visited Elmira (11-11-3 25 pts.) Sunday night and they finally avoided the one period let down and came away with a single point in a 3-2 shootout loss.

That point will be critical as teams jockey for playoff position. Currently Guelph sits 8th in the MidWestern Division and would face the top seeded Brantford Golden Eagles in the first round of the playoffs.

The Stratford Cullitons snapped their 11 game losing streak Sunday afternoon with a 6-5 win over the Listowel Cyclones.

GOJHL’s leading scorer is Josh McQuade (Brantford Golden Eagles) is averaging 3 points per game (81 pts. in 27 games) and is on a pace to score 153 pts. this season.

Next home game for the Canes is Thursday December 3 when they face Josh McQuade and the 1st place Brantford Golden Eagles. Game time at the Sleeman Center is 7:45 p.m.

Hurricanes Blow 2 Goal Lead & Lose In OT

For 50 minutes the Hurricanes showed Listowel Cyclones that they had a new and improved work ethic. However, with 10 minutes to play and the Canes leading 4-2 the Cyclones showed them what true work ethic was.

In the last 10 minutes of the game the Cyclones did what they do best, they outworked the Canes.

In the process they scored 2 goals to send the game into overtime. Momentum carried them into OT and slighty over a minute in they scored the winner to spoil an otherwise awesome game for Guelph.

On the positive side the Hurricanes earned a point to tie them with Elmira in the league standings.

The 1st period belonged to Guelph as they out hustled Listowel and fought harder for the loose pucks. The strong goaltending of Guelph native Jim Prigone kept the Cyclones close. He also made an amazing glove save late in the third to send the game into OT.

Scoring for Guelph was Mike McFarland with 2. Dan Mohle with his 16th and Ken Rolph with his 8th scored for the Canes. Zach Dion, Mike Iaccoca, Martin Kudla and Rolph all recorded assists.

The Canes next home game is in 2 weeks (Nov. 7th) when they host the Waterloo Siskins. Game time at the Sleeman Center is 7:30 p.m.
