Hurricanes beat Sugar Kings in OT

from http://www.guelphhurricanes.com

CANES WIN A NAILBITER 4-3

Excitement was the order of the night as the Guelph Hurricanes and the Elmira Sugar Kings treated a good Hockey Day crowd to a thrill packed game. The Ice Palace was frigid as usual but the action inside was red hot.

Pegrum Glove the Puck to help Grab the Win

It looked like another typical Canes/Sugar Kings duel featuring excellent goaltending by Drew Pegrum and his counterpart former Cane Brendon Gorecki.

Speedy Martin Kudla(13) broke the ice when he broke in on Gorecki and made a nifty move to put the Canes on top 1-0. Brad Kraus tied it up with a laser beam only to have Nic MacEachern(7) do his Sydney Crosby impression to regain the lead 2-1. It stayed that way until captain Mike McFarlane(7) scored a powerplay goal with help from Luca Penzo and Mike Iacocca.

With another 3-1, 3rd period lead it looked like the Canes were headed for another disappointing loss when Elmira scored twice late in the 3rd on goals by Parent and LeBlanc to send the game to overtime.

Mid way through the overtime period defensive wizard Jake Weidner stole the puck at the Canes blueline and sped down the wing. Weidner threaded a perfect pass to Zach Dion(6) in front of the Kings net who finished the play off with a perfect shot to win the game 4-3.

Check out the Hurricanes facebook page http://www.facebook.com/guelphhurricanes and look at over 150 pictures that Richard Elmes took at the game last night.

Next Canes action is Saturday, February 6 at the Victoria Road Arena when they face the Waterloo Siskins. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

McDougall Steals Win as Hurricanes beat Listowel 2-1

from http://www.guelphhurricanes.com

MCDOUGALL STEALS WIN

McDougall stops 50 of 51 shots

Hurricanes goaltender, Chris McDougall has played well all season. Last night in Listowel was maybe his best game so far. Kicking out 50 of 51 shots and with the GM of the OHL Peterborough Petes in the crowd McDougall put on another goaltender clinic.

Jim Prigione the Cyclones goalie also played well only allowing goals by Jake Weidner(2) and Connor Ste Marie. Collecting assists were Daniel Cotroneo and Mike McFarland.

For the 3rd consecutive game the Canes were full measure for the win. They played hard for a full 60 minutes and carried the play at different times in the game.

This was the front end of a home and home series with the Cyclones and the 1st game between the 2 teams since the trade.

Tomorow night sees the return of Dan Mohle and Ken Rolph at the Sleeman Center. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Remember to bring the kids, because for each adult admission purchased up to 4 children ages 0-13 can get in Free.

Hurricanes get younger and bigger as they build for the Future

from http://www.guelphhurricanes.com

CANES & CYCLONES MAKE TRADE

Hurricanes General Manager Matt Mullin has pulled off a trade with the Listowel Cyclones that appears to help both teams.

Ken Rolph and Dan Mohle traded to Listowel

Offensive threats Dan Mohle and Ken Rolph will be travelling to Listowel to complete their junior careers with the tough Cyclones.

With the addition of the two 20 year olds the Cyclones are now in the hunt for the Sutherland Cup.

Coming to the Huricanes are two 1992’s Blair Goss from Fergus and Jake Weidner from Grand Valley. Weidner also plays lacrosse for the Elora Mohawks. Included in the deal for Guelph are future considerations.

Mullin thanked Mohle and Rolph for their service with Guelph junior B’s and wished them continued success in Listowel.

The irony of this deal is that the Canes and Cyclones play a home and home series this weekend starting Friday night in Listowel.

The Cyclones with Mohle and Rolph in the lineup visit the Sleeman Center on Saturday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Waterloo Siskins -8 Guelph Hurricanes (0)uch!!!

from http://www.guelphhurricanes.com

THIS WAS UGLY

An 8-0 loss to the 2nd place Waterloo Siskins. What more needs to be said? This was the Hurricanes worst loss of the season. After a scoreless 1st period the Siskins came out strong and scored 3 goals in 3 minutes and never looked back.

There is no rest as Guelph returns to the ice tomorrow night at home vs. the Stratford Cullitons. Guelph’s veteran skaters have to step up and show leadership to pull the Canes out of their slump.

Game time at the Sleeman Center is 7:30 p.m.

The Canes learned earlier to-day that their #1 goalie Chris MacDougall was traded by his OHL team the Kitchener Rangers for a draft pick and a defenseman to the Peterborough Petes.

Canes wish Chris all the best and thank him for his stellar service to the team.

Home & Home Big for Canes

From http://www.guelphhurricanes.com

There’s an old saying “Its not how you start but how you finish!”

The Canes hope that saying fits their future as they open a crucial home & home weekend series with the Kitchener Dutchmen. http://www.kitchenerdutchmen.com

Both teams find themselves struggling in the early season. Guelph has a 4 point lead on the Dutchies entering the series. 2 wins for the Canes would put them right back in thick of the race.

Guelph will be relying on the scoring of their big line of Dan Mohle, Tyson Theaker and Ken Rolph. Mohle is in the top 5 scoring in the GOJHL and Theaker and Rolph have been hot lately. More important will be the inspired play of newcomers Martin Kudla and Mike Iaccoca.

On defense the Canes are led by Luca Penzo, Wade Pfeffer, Cayle Creen and Zach Dion.

The goaltending of Chris MacDougall and Trevor McGee will have to step up and continue their improved play.

Game 1 of the home and home is Saturday, October 17. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Fans are reminded to use gate 1 to enter the Sleeman Center. Game 2 goes Sunday, October 18 at the Kitchener Auditorium annex. Game time is 2:30 pm.
