Hurricanes win key game in Kitchener

from: http://www.guelphhurricanes.com

TEAM EFFORT BEATS DUTCHMEN

The Guelph Hurricanes proved that old adage last night in Kitchener…”Play as a team. Win as a team.” Already missing 2 of their top defensemen Cayle Creen(out for the season-knee injury) and Zach Dion (suspension) the Canes lost Daniel Cotroneo when he left the game in the 1st period. The Canes eventhough they were outshooting the Dutchmen fell behind 2-0 before a Wade Pfeffer(2) point shot found the net to cut the lead in half.

In the break Coach MacEachern and his associates reminded the team of the game plan and how important this game was. They responded by scoring the next 4 goals. The line of Mike Iacocca, Martin Kudla and Jake Weidner continued to shine offensively. Iaccoca(18), Weidner(8) and Kudla(17 – empty net) all scored. Canes leading scoreer Tyson Theaker added his 18th while Blair Goss, Cam Jude, Iacocca, Kudla, Connor Ste. Marie and Nic MacEachern(2) contributed assists.

After backing up Brandon Foote on the Storm’s northern trip Drew Pegrum returned to shut down the Dutchmen after the 1st period to record the win. Pegrum made his best save of the night late in the 3rd with the score 3-2 and the Dutchmen pressing. Theaker scored right after that to put the game away. In all he stopped 26 shots many of the difficult variety.

Final Score Guelph 5, Kitchener 2

The Hurricanes last home game of the regular season is Thursday, February 25 at the Sleeman Centre when the Cambridge WinterHawks are the visitors. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Play-offs will either Wednesday(Waterloo) or Thursday(Brantford) depending on the final standings.

Hurricanes drop a close one to Cyclones in OT

from http://www.guelphhurricanes.com

CANES LOSE IN OVERTIME

The atmosphere inside the Ice Palace was hot for a couple of hours as the Hurricanes and Cyclones put on one of the most entertaining, exciting games of the season. The Cyclones prevailed in overtime 4-3 but were pushed to the limit by the hard working Canes.

Chris McDougall covers the puck

Listowel struck first with former Cane Dan Mohle chipping a loose puck into the net for a 1-0 first period lead. The Cyclones struck again before the Canes went to work. Tyson Theaker(17) scored from Mike McFarlane and Nic MacEachern making the score 2-1 entering the 3rd period.

The Canes came out flying in the 3rd and put pressure on Guelph native Jim Prigione. Prigone made a number of excellent saves before Luca Penzo(5) beat him with a power play goal to tie the game. Martin Kudla and Mike Iaccoca assisted on the goal. Canes kept up the pressure until McFarlane(10) with assists from Theaker and Wade Pfeffer put the Canes up 3-2.

Now it was McDougall’s turn to shine in the Canes net and he did. He made a number of excellent saves to keep the Canes in the lead. But with the Canes in control and less than 2 minutes left lighting struck. Former Hurricane Ken Rolph stole the puck in the offensive zone, walked in on McDougall and scored sending the game into overtime.

An ill-advised retailiation penalty with less than a minute left in regulation gave the Cyclones the man advantage heading into overtime. Fergus resident Eric Dekkers scored right off the face-off with a blast that caught McDougall off guard to send the Listowel fans home happy.

The one point puts the Canes in a dead heat with the Kitchener Dutchmen setting up their upcomng game on Tuesday in Kitchener.

The Canes have 4 games left in the regular season with the lone home game being next Thursday Feb 25th at the the Sleeman Centre vs. the Cambridge WinterHawks. Game time is 7:45 p.m.

Dutchmen steal one from Hurricanes

In late February when the GOJHL (Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League) regular season comes to a close and the Guelph Hurricanes see who they are facing in the playoffs, they may be thinking of this game tonight at Victoria Road Arena, this 4-3 shootout loss to the Kitchener Dutchmen as… the one that got away.

McDougall down after Dutchmen tie the game

Kitchener’s Ted Anstett opened up the scoring in the first, before Taylor Lukasik (shorthanded) and Blair Goss (powerplay) scored for Guelph and after one period, the Hurricanes led 2-1.

After a scoreless 2nd period, Tyson Theaker extended the Hurricanes lead to 3-1 at the 15:33 mark of the 3rd period.

With the Hurricanes leading 3-1 with 2:34 left in the 3rd period in a tight checking affair with the Kitchener Dutchmen it looked like the gap in points between these two teams was about to widen. With the win Guelph would have moved 6 points ahead (27 pts to 21) of the 8th place Dutchmen and would have decreased the likelihood of facing the MidWestern Division leading Brantford Golden Eagles in the first round of the playoffs.

But that wasn’t to be.

The Dutchmen called a time out and then pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. Then Tanner DeWitt scored with 2:26 left on the clock and then Ryan Clarkson and tied it up with 56 seconds left in the 3rd.

Overtime solved nothing, so the teams went to a shootout.

Mark Scheifele’s wrist shot in the top corner over the Hurricane goaltender Chris McDougall’s glove proved to be the winner for the Dutchmen.

With the one point they gained in the shootout loss, Guelph now sit tied in 6th (tied with Elmira, however the Sugar Kings have two games in hand) with 26 pts. , Kitchener with 23 pts. remains in 8th.

The Hurricanes take to the road for their next two games, Friday Jan. 8th in Waterloo and Saturday Jan. 9th in Brantford.

The next Hurricanes home game is the following Thursday Jan. 14th, when they take on the Cambridge Winter Hawks in a 7:45 pm start at the Sleeman Centre.

New Netminder gets the call for the Hurricanes

from http://www.guelphmercury.com by Rob Massey

GUELPH — After a couple of weeks of practising with the Guelph Hurricanes, Drew Pegrum will get his first start in net with the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League team.

“It’ll be great to get a game in this weekend,” Pegrum said.

Hurricanes goalie Drew Pegrum

Pegrum was part of the Hurricanes’ blockbuster deal with the Listowel Cyclones that saw them send top scorers Dan Mohle and Ken Rolph to the Cyclones for youngsters Blair Goss and Jake Weidner. Pegrum came to Guelph a week later after Listowel acquired goaltender Brock Hansell from the Thorold Black Hawks.

“We ended up sending two 20-year-olds up there and we got two 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old back,” Hurricanes head coach Jim MacEachern said. “The goal here is to get younger. That’s what we’re trying to do. We have until Jan. 10th and if something else comes up, we might take advantage of that, too.”

Pegrum has a 4-5-0-1 record this season, with two of his wins coming against the Hurricanes. He has a 4.29 goals-against average and a .876 save percentage. He played five games in September and two early in October before hurting his left knee. He’s played three games since Oct. 10 – a win over Guelph, a loss to Brantford and a shootout loss to Kitchener – as Guelph native James Prigione, a veteran with the Cyclones, increased his playing time.

“I was playing a bunch at the start of the season and I got injured,” Pegrum said. “Prigione stepped up when I was injured and he started playing really good, so he got a lot of time after that.”

Pegrum said his knee is fine now.

“It’s better now,” he said. “It’s been strong for about four weeks.”

With the Hurricanes, Pegrum is expected to be the main backup to Chris McDougall, who has appeared in 19 of Guelph’s 31 games. McDougall will get the start Saturday night against the Welland Canadians at the Sleeman Centre while Pegrum will get the call Sunday afternoon against the Dutchmen in Kitchener.

“Chris is our No. 1, I’m not going to deny that,” MacEachern said. “Again, we’ve got to look out for the future. I would expect and I would hope that Doogs (McDougall) is playing for the Peterborough Petes next year. Drew is going to go as much as Doogs here. When we get into the playoffs or down the stretch, I’ll probably go with the guy who is hot.”

Until then, it’ll be a rotation of sorts, likely with McDougall getting two starts for every one that Pegrum gets.

Missing ring motivation for Guelph bench boss

Missing ring motivation for Guelph bench boss

Posted By Mike Savage

If he had a do-over, Jim MacEachern would have played the 1987-88 season for the Waterloo Siskins.

His decision to not play that year still haunts him, yet serves as motivation for his new mission — help the Guelph Hurricanes bring home a championship.

“The city of Guelph deserves a winner, our owners deserve a winner, and that’s what we’re striving for,” MacEachern, the Hurricanes’ head coach since early October, said last night. “It may not happen this year. We know the odds are against it. What we need to do first is establish a winning attitude. The only way that will happen is if we string some ‘W’s’ together and build some confidence.

“It all starts with enjoying being at the rink and doing all you can to win. That has to be the goal every night or you’re in the wrong place.”

Fanelli feeling better

Fanelli can’t recall ‘The Hit’

Joe Warmington, The Toronto Sun Oakville | Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 5:12 am

Oakville – It seems the only person who hasn’t seen “The Hit” is the very guy who took it.

He may not have seen it but young hockey player Ben Fanelli lived it.

At least that’s what doctors, his teammates and his loving family have told him.

The 16-year-old Fanelli also doesn’t remember an opposing forward crashing toward him, his head smashing into the glass, his blood pouring onto the ice, his teammates circled around him in prayer, him being taken off with a back board before the horrified Kitchener crowd or the airlift to hospital in critical condition.

But one look in the mirror shows something drastic happened. And that giant scar running down from his right eye tells the whole story of a kid who suffered a cracked skull and broken orbital bone.

Throw in that “fuzzy” feeling as he walks and the Oakville kid understands it must have been a heck of a wallop which prompted OHL commissioner David Branch to suspend Erie Otter Mike Liambas for the remainder of the OHL season.

“I don’t remember any of it,” the talented Kitchener Rangers defenceman laughs Tuesday in his first public words about the Friday, Oct. 30 bodycheck seen and heard across the country.

Of course his mortified parents certainly do since they were at the game.

“It was my worst nightmare,” says his mom, Susan.

Firefighter dad Frank agrees, saying they are so grateful to have their son home because in the hours after this incident it was “touch and go” where doctors warned there were no guarantees.

“I thought for sure he was going to check out,” says an emotional Frank. “If you had a child you would understand how that felt. I died inside.”

Their son dying, being on life-support or permanently disabled were all scenarios they were trying to come to grips with.

But there they were yesterday.

Their wonderful son is home from hospital, healing and already looking ahead. From the depths of darkness to relief.

“We want to thank everybody for their cards, well wishes and prayers,” says Susan.

“And the Kitchener Rangers organization has been amazing,” says Frank.

Ben adds he was shocked that so many cared — everything from being mentioned on Hockey Night in Canada to having former NHLer Adam Graves come to visit him in hospital.

The product of the Mississauga Senators of the GTHL’s focus now is to work with the doctors and recover from this unexpected road block in his career.

“I can’t wait to get back on the bus and see the guys again,” says an enthusiastic Ben.

Not so fast, say his parents. There are a number of steps to go through first.

“He is going back to McMaster for more tests,” says his dad, adding there are concerns over a “clot” as well as other potential damage.

While Ben’s mom says, “there will be some discussion before he puts the skates on again” you could certainly tell by the look on Ben’s face that if he has his way not only will he do that, but he’ll be back out there on OHL ice as soon as humanly possible.

Those kinds of decisions will have to come in their proper time, says Frank.

“We don’t know yet,” he says of the long-term prognosis, adding there are more tests to come.

But he’s certainly in a better place than a week ago. And it was a good sign to see young Ben Tuesday throw on his Kitchener Rangers number 4 and head out for a walk around the block with his mom and dad.

He’s a very nice kid and you can tell why because he comes from a very nice family.

“I feel pretty good right now,” says Ben with a smile.

He’ll feel even better when he can get back in the Kitchener Rangers’ lineup — one event he, and all those who root for him, will have no problem remembering.

CANES FALL TO SISKINS

Guelph Hurricanes fall into last place in the Midwestern Division

A Hurricanes loss and a Kitchener win dropped Guelph into last place in the Mid-Western Division of the GOHL. Playing in front of one of their largest crowds of the season the Canes watched as the Siskins scored 3 unanswered goals to wipe out a 3-2 lead.

The Canes were playing without their top scorer Dan Mohle and two of their top defensmen Wade Pfeffer and Lucas Penzo. The Canes were full measure for their 3-2 lead as Ken Rolph(9), Andrew VanOoteghem(5) and newcomer Taylor Lukasuk(1) scored. Picking up assists were VanOoteghem, Tyson Theaker, Cam Jude and Brandon Anselmini. 16 year old Anselmini playing a regular shift because of the injuries was one of the bright spots for the Canes.

Canes take to the road for their next 2 games. They visit Cambridge for a 7:00 p.m. start tomorrow and travel to Stratford next Friday to meet the Cullitons for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Fanelli released from hospital, Liambas’ OHL career ends

from Waterloo Region Record
Rangers’ Fanelli released from hospital, resting at home in Oakville

November 07, 2009

Waterloo Region Record staff and news services

Kitchener Rangers defenceman Ben Fanelli has been released from hospital and is resting at home in Oakville, the team told The Waterloo Region Record on Saturday.

“The family advised me at about 9 this morning,” Rangers’ chief operating officer Steve Bienkowski told The Record shortly after a media release was posted to the team website. “This is really good news, but we’re still cautious; it’s only been a week.”

Bienkowski said he does not know whether Fanelli’s medical status has been upgraded again. Fanelli had been upgraded from critical but stable to serious but stable earlier in the week.

Fanelli, who suffered a fractured skull in a game on Friday, Oct. 30, was released late Friday night.

“This is obviously an emotional day for the Fanelli family, our organization and community and really for the entire Ontario Hockey League’s players and fans,” Bienkowski said in the release. “ It is still very early in Ben’s recovery that will include out-patient treatments at the hospital along with additional supporting treatments at home.”

Ben’s mother, Susan Fanelli, said in the release that “the support from the Kitchener Rangers organization has been wonderful. We are so appreciative it is hard to express.”

Restrictions on visiting will remain in effect while the Rangers and the Fanelli family continue their policy that requests for privacy continue to be honoured. Any future information will continue to be released through the Rangers, the team reiterated.

Bienkowski told The Record that the team is hoping to arrange limited, selective team visits to the Fanelli home over the next few days.

___________

Meanwhile Michael Liambas, the Erie player who administered the hit has been suspended for the entire season, plus playoffs. This suspension ends Liambas’ OHL career, as this was the last year he was eligible to play.

Their is much debate in the hockey world about the suspension and whether it was a clean hit or not.
