Hurricanes drop a close one to Cyclones in OT

CANES LOSE IN OVERTIME

The atmosphere inside the Ice Palace was hot for a couple of hours as the Hurricanes and Cyclones put on one of the most entertaining, exciting games of the season. The Cyclones prevailed in overtime 4-3 but were pushed to the limit by the hard working Canes.

Chris McDougall covers the puck

Listowel struck first with former Cane Dan Mohle chipping a loose puck into the net for a 1-0 first period lead. The Cyclones struck again before the Canes went to work. Tyson Theaker(17) scored from Mike McFarlane and Nic MacEachern making the score 2-1 entering the 3rd period.

The Canes came out flying in the 3rd and put pressure on Guelph native Jim Prigione. Prigone made a number of excellent saves before Luca Penzo(5) beat him with a power play goal to tie the game. Martin Kudla and Mike Iaccoca assisted on the goal. Canes kept up the pressure until McFarlane(10) with assists from Theaker and Wade Pfeffer put the Canes up 3-2.

Now it was McDougall’s turn to shine in the Canes net and he did. He made a number of excellent saves to keep the Canes in the lead. But with the Canes in control and less than 2 minutes left lighting struck. Former Hurricane Ken Rolph stole the puck in the offensive zone, walked in on McDougall and scored sending the game into overtime.

An ill-advised retailiation penalty with less than a minute left in regulation gave the Cyclones the man advantage heading into overtime. Fergus resident Eric Dekkers scored right off the face-off with a blast that caught McDougall off guard to send the Listowel fans home happy.

The one point puts the Canes in a dead heat with the Kitchener Dutchmen setting up their upcomng game on Tuesday in Kitchener.

The Canes have 4 games left in the regular season with the lone home game being next Thursday Feb 25th at the the Sleeman Centre vs. the Cambridge WinterHawks. Game time is 7:45 p.m.

GUELPH – The Guelph Hurricanes held the Brantford Golden Eagles at bay for a period before the Midwestern Conference leaders pulled away for a 6-1 Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League victory Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The game was scoreless after the first period before Brantford scored six consecutive goals, four of them coming in the second period.

Jake Weidner ruined the shutout bid by Daryl Borden when he scored a shorthanded goal for the Hurricanes at 14:54 of the third period. Connor Ste. Marie and goaltender Chris McDougall assisted on the play.

Thomas Middup and league scoring leader Josh McQuade scored twice each for Brantford while Joe Vanni and Jeff Lynch added single goals. McQuade also had two assists to give him 61 goals and 80 assists in 48 games.

Siskins use Relentless Forecheck to down Hurricanes 4-2

Waterloo’s relentless forecheck kept the Hurricanes on their heals most of the night and this created many scoring chances for the Siskins in their 4-2 win over the Guelph Thursday night at The Sleeman Centre.

Guelph's Martin Kudla battles Waterloo's Kevin Henriques for the puck

Except for 10 minutes in the 2nd period, the Siskins were aggressive in taking the play to the Hurricanes.

If it wasn’t for the stellar goaltending by Chris McDougall who turned away 40 of 44 shots, the score of this game could have easily mirrored the score in their last outing when Waterloo beat Guelph 8-0.

In the opening period, Waterloo fired 24 shots at McDougall and jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Scott Nagy, Ryan Dilks and Andrew Csumrik.

Tyson Theaker pulled the Hurricanes within 2 with a goal 17 seconds into the second period.

Waterloo’s Tony Blyde restored the Siskin’s 3 goal lead 2 and a half minutes later.

The score stayed 4-1 until Peter Soligo scored on shot from the point after Siskins goalie Will Sibley stopped Nic MacEachern and Mike McFarlane on a 2 on 0.

The Hurricanes pulled their goalie late in the game but couldn’t get another one past Sibley.

Final Score: Waterloo (now 18-5-0) 4, Guelph (now 8-16-2) 2

The Hurricanes take to the road for their next 2 games, Saturday in Cambridge and Sunday in Elmira.

Guelph’s next home game will be next Thursday December 3rd against the league leading Brantford Golden Eagles. Game time is 7:45 pm.

Guelph Hurricanes/ McDougall seek revenge in Stratford Friday

I’m confident that the events didn’t play out as goaltender Chris McDougall imagined it when he played his first GOJHL game  on opening night (Sept. 17th) against the Stratford Cullitons.

In that game the visiting Cullitons ruined the Hurricanes opening night by beating the Hurricanes (in their first game at the Sleeman Centre) 6-1.

Opening night vs. Stratford Cullitons

Opening night vs. Stratford Cullitons

Tomorrow night the 5-9-1 Hurricanes seek revenge on the 12-3-0 Cullitons in Stratford.

If they are to get that revenge they will need to stop Stratford’s top 6 players.

Forwards #18 Kyle Wilhelm 10-17-27, #22  Cohen Adair 13-11-24 &  #20 Brad McClure 10-4-14

Defencemen #5 Craig Dalrymple 2-13-15 & #15 Kyle Roes 1-13-14

as well as Goalie #30 Evan Groenestege 8-1-0 2.00 GAA, .939 Sv%

The Hurricanes will have to stay out of the penalty box because Stratford has the 4th best PP Unit in the league 23/98 23.47% .

Stratford also sports the best PK unit in the league 8/101 92.08%.

Although some people would think that this game would be an easy victory for Stratford.

But never under estimate the Hurricanes and the power of revenge.

Because at the end of the game if Chris McDougall (who has played solid as of late) avenges his earlier loss by standing on his head.

If the Hurricanes avenge the earlier feeling of being embarrassed in their own barn, by working hard every shift. Hitting early and often (cleanly) and beating Stratford in their own barn…. you never know!!!

And folks that is why they play the games.

Game time in Stratford is 7:30 pm.

The next Guelph Hurricanes home game is Saturday Oct. 24th, 7:30 at The Sleeman Centre, vs. the Listowel Cyclones.

Despite solid goaltending Guelph loses 4-2 to Kitchener

 Game Stories

What was Good about Guelph’s game last night:

Hurricanes penalty killing unit only allowed one goal in 8 chances, including killing off 2 5 on 3’s.

What the Hurricanes could have done Better:

1. Come out hitting… cleanly. When a youngster attending his first Hurricanes game asked me about 5 minutes into the first period if they were allowed to hit in this league. That is not good. In previous games, the Hurricanes created chances by not giving their opponents an opportunity to make the play before being introduced to the boards.

2. Stay out of the penalty box! Guelph accumulated 24 penalty minutes on 8 infractions. Compared that to Kitchener’s 4 minutes on 2 penalties. There are not many teams that you are going to beat if you are going to play shorthanded for approximately 1/3 of the game.

What was the Best part of the game for Guelph:

Hurricanes goalie Chris McDougall deflects a shot wide

Hurricanes goalie Chris McDougall deflects a shot wide

Solid play by Hurricanes goaltender, Chris McDougall. McDougall stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced and helped keep his team in the game. At least, 2 of the goals that did get by him were via deflections, where he didn’t have a chance.

Scoring: Guelph 1-0-1 = 2, Kitchener 1-1-2 = 4

Shots: Guelph 7-6-12= 24, Kitchener 11-13-7=31
