Hurricanes drop a close one to Cyclones in OT

CANES LOSE IN OVERTIME

The atmosphere inside the Ice Palace was hot for a couple of hours as the Hurricanes and Cyclones put on one of the most entertaining, exciting games of the season. The Cyclones prevailed in overtime 4-3 but were pushed to the limit by the hard working Canes.

Listowel struck first with former Cane Dan Mohle chipping a loose puck into the net for a 1-0 first period lead. The Cyclones struck again before the Canes went to work. Tyson Theaker(17) scored from Mike McFarlane and Nic MacEachern making the score 2-1 entering the 3rd period.

The Canes came out flying in the 3rd and put pressure on Guelph native Jim Prigione. Prigone made a number of excellent saves before Luca Penzo(5) beat him with a power play goal to tie the game. Martin Kudla and Mike Iaccoca assisted on the goal. Canes kept up the pressure until McFarlane(10) with assists from Theaker and Wade Pfeffer put the Canes up 3-2.

Now it was McDougall’s turn to shine in the Canes net and he did. He made a number of excellent saves to keep the Canes in the lead. But with the Canes in control and less than 2 minutes left lighting struck. Former Hurricane Ken Rolph stole the puck in the offensive zone, walked in on McDougall and scored sending the game into overtime.

An ill-advised retailiation penalty with less than a minute left in regulation gave the Cyclones the man advantage heading into overtime. Fergus resident Eric Dekkers scored right off the face-off with a blast that caught McDougall off guard to send the Listowel fans home happy.

The one point puts the Canes in a dead heat with the Kitchener Dutchmen setting up their upcomng game on Tuesday in Kitchener.

The Canes have 4 games left in the regular season with the lone home game being next Thursday Feb 25th at the the Sleeman Centre vs. the Cambridge WinterHawks. Game time is 7:45 p.m.

Back woes ground Storm goaltender

GUELPH — Guelph Storm goaltender Cody St. Jacques could be done for the season.

St. Jacques flew home to Iroquois Falls last weekend to have an MRI on his ailing back in nearby Timmins and the results weren’t good.

“I’ve got two herniated discs and one bulging disc,” St. Jacques said in street clothes from rinkside Wednesday as his teammates practiced at the Sleeman Centre.

“They told me I have early degenerative discs, which is extremely rare for a 19 year old. My dad’s side of the family always had back problems, so I’m not surprised there was a problem with the discs, but I was surprised how bad it was.”

St. Jacques is waiting for an appointment with a surgeon in Hamilton who will evaluate how bad things are and whether or not he can do any more damage to his back.

“Until then I won’t be on the ice or doing anything too physical,” he said.

St. Jacques has played in 26 games for the Storm this season but hasn’t seen any game action since Jan. 2.

Pegrum will play with the Storm this weekend

The Storm had four goaltenders on the ice yesterday. Brandon Foote was joined by James Prigione, Guelph Hurricanes goaltender Drew Pegrum and Guelph Storm midget AA goaltender Joe Drexler, who backed up Foote in Owen Sound last Saturday.

With Prigione having starting netminding duties with the junior B Listowel Cyclones this weekend, it will be Pegrum that gets the nod as the backup for this weekend’s three-game Eastern Ontario swing to Kingston, Belleville and Ottawa.

Pegrum becomes the sixth goaltender to dress for the Storm this season. He has split this season with Listowel and Guelph at the junior B level, compiling a 7-7-0-1 record and 4.11 goals-against average.

He recently made headlines by scoring in a game against the Waterloo Siskins.

The Hurricanes wish Drew success with the Storm.

The Hurricanes next game is this Saturday night (7:30 pm) at Victoria Road Arena when they take on the Waterloo Siskins.  This will be the final regular season meeting between these two teams. There is a strong possiblity that they will meet in the first round of the playoffs.

MCDOUGALL STEALS WIN

McDougall stops 50 of 51 shots

Hurricanes goaltender, Chris McDougall has played well all season. Last night in Listowel was maybe his best game so far. Kicking out 50 of 51 shots and with the GM of the OHL Peterborough Petes in the crowd McDougall put on another goaltender clinic.

Jim Prigione the Cyclones goalie also played well only allowing goals by Jake Weidner(2) and Connor Ste Marie. Collecting assists were Daniel Cotroneo and Mike McFarland.

For the 3rd consecutive game the Canes were full measure for the win. They played hard for a full 60 minutes and carried the play at different times in the game.

This was the front end of a home and home series with the Cyclones and the 1st game between the 2 teams since the trade.

Tomorow night sees the return of Dan Mohle and Ken Rolph at the Sleeman Center. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Remember to bring the kids, because for each adult admission purchased up to 4 children ages 0-13 can get in Free.

Saturday is Kid's get in Free night

For all those Dad’s out there who need to keep the Kids occupied Saturday night so Mom can finish the Christmas Shopping, the Guelph Hurricanes have a solution to their problem.

This Saturday (Dec. 5th, 2009) night kids ages 0-13 get in Free as the Guelph Hurricanes take on Dan Mohle and the Listowel Cyclones in the back end of a home and home series.

For every adult ticket purchased up to 4 kids get in free.

This will be an opportunity for parents (the promotion works with Mom’s as well) to spend quality time (in a very economical way) with their kids during this hectic season.

Fanelli feeling better

Fanelli can’t recall ‘The Hit’

Oakville – It seems the only person who hasn’t seen “The Hit” is the very guy who took it.

He may not have seen it but young hockey player Ben Fanelli lived it.

At least that’s what doctors, his teammates and his loving family have told him.

The 16-year-old Fanelli also doesn’t remember an opposing forward crashing toward him, his head smashing into the glass, his blood pouring onto the ice, his teammates circled around him in prayer, him being taken off with a back board before the horrified Kitchener crowd or the airlift to hospital in critical condition.

But one look in the mirror shows something drastic happened. And that giant scar running down from his right eye tells the whole story of a kid who suffered a cracked skull and broken orbital bone.

Throw in that “fuzzy” feeling as he walks and the Oakville kid understands it must have been a heck of a wallop which prompted OHL commissioner David Branch to suspend Erie Otter Mike Liambas for the remainder of the OHL season.

“I don’t remember any of it,” the talented Kitchener Rangers defenceman laughs Tuesday in his first public words about the Friday, Oct. 30 bodycheck seen and heard across the country.

Of course his mortified parents certainly do since they were at the game.

“It was my worst nightmare,” says his mom, Susan.

Firefighter dad Frank agrees, saying they are so grateful to have their son home because in the hours after this incident it was “touch and go” where doctors warned there were no guarantees.

“I thought for sure he was going to check out,” says an emotional Frank. “If you had a child you would understand how that felt. I died inside.”

Their son dying, being on life-support or permanently disabled were all scenarios they were trying to come to grips with.

But there they were yesterday.

Their wonderful son is home from hospital, healing and already looking ahead. From the depths of darkness to relief.

“We want to thank everybody for their cards, well wishes and prayers,” says Susan.

“And the Kitchener Rangers organization has been amazing,” says Frank.

Ben adds he was shocked that so many cared — everything from being mentioned on Hockey Night in Canada to having former NHLer Adam Graves come to visit him in hospital.

The product of the Mississauga Senators of the GTHL’s focus now is to work with the doctors and recover from this unexpected road block in his career.

“I can’t wait to get back on the bus and see the guys again,” says an enthusiastic Ben.

Not so fast, say his parents. There are a number of steps to go through first.

“He is going back to McMaster for more tests,” says his dad, adding there are concerns over a “clot” as well as other potential damage.

While Ben’s mom says, “there will be some discussion before he puts the skates on again” you could certainly tell by the look on Ben’s face that if he has his way not only will he do that, but he’ll be back out there on OHL ice as soon as humanly possible.

Those kinds of decisions will have to come in their proper time, says Frank.

“We don’t know yet,” he says of the long-term prognosis, adding there are more tests to come.

But he’s certainly in a better place than a week ago. And it was a good sign to see young Ben Tuesday throw on his Kitchener Rangers number 4 and head out for a walk around the block with his mom and dad.

He’s a very nice kid and you can tell why because he comes from a very nice family.

“I feel pretty good right now,” says Ben with a smile.

He’ll feel even better when he can get back in the Kitchener Rangers’ lineup — one event he, and all those who root for him, will have no problem remembering.

Both teams find themselves struggling in the early season. Guelph has a 4 point lead on the Dutchies entering the series. 2 wins for the Canes would put them right back in thick of the race.

Guelph will be relying on the scoring of their big line of Dan Mohle, Tyson Theaker and Ken Rolph. Mohle is in the top 5 scoring in the GOJHL and Theaker and Rolph have been hot lately. More important will be the inspired play of newcomers Martin Kudla and Mike Iaccoca.

On defense the Canes are led by Luca Penzo, Wade Pfeffer, Cayle Creen and Zach Dion.

The goaltending of Chris MacDougall and Trevor McGee will have to step up and continue their improved play.

Game 1 of the home and home is Saturday, October 17. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Fans are reminded to use gate 1 to enter the Sleeman Center. Game 2 goes Sunday, October 18 at the Kitchener Auditorium annex. Game time is 2:30 pm.
